    Preventative Care

We believe prevention is better than a cure.

Are you worried about the state of your teeth?

Establishing good oral health care from a young age has a major impact on an individual’s oral health through adulthood and old age. Studies have shown that people who regularly visit a dentist for a routine check up are most likely to benefit from early prevention, detection and intervention and have been shown to have a low level of extractions and fillings compared to those who access dentists only when they are experiencing a dental problem.

Healthy Bite Dental is dedicated to promoting good dental health to both children and adults so you have the best chance to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile for life. We place great importance on oral hygiene and preventative care of all our patients and recommend a check-up and professional clean every six months.

Why do I need to have my teeth checked?

Regular check-ups from two years of age allows our team to find any potential problems and take preventative action to minimise major problems down the track or if possible, prevent them altogether. Treating dental problems before they create significant damage will save you time, money and discomfort in the long run and encourage dental longevity.

What happens if I don’t visit a dentist?

Poor oral hygiene commonly leads to gum disease, which in its early stages causes red, swollen and bleeding gums. If this is not treated, it can become quite serious and even result in tooth loss.

    What happens at a check-up?

Our dentist and dental assistant will introduce themselves and ask if you have any specific concerns or issues with your teeth, gums or appearance of your smile.

A comprehensive dental examination will be performed at your initial dental visit to assess the current condition of your teeth and gums. This may include having x-rays taken. During the examination, our dentist will perform the following:

    • Examination of tooth decay: all tooth surfaces will be checked for decay
    • Examination of existing restorations: check current fillings, crowns, veneers etc
    • Oral cancer screening: check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums for any signs of oral cancer
    • TMJ evaluation: check your jaw joint for dysfunction
    • Examination of x-rays: essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, bone loss, tooth and root position
    • Ask about, and give advice on, your diet, smoking and alcohol use, and teeth cleaning habits

Upon completion of your examination, a treatment plan (if required) outlining recommended options and fees will be provided.

    Teeth cleaning

To ensure a beautiful healthy smile for life, it’s important for both adults and children to clean their teeth at least twice a day. We recommend a gentle but thorough brushing action using a soft toothbrush with a small head and fluoride toothpaste.

In addition to home care, it is important to have your teeth professionally cleaned by your Dentist. A professional clean, also known as a scale and clean, is designed to remove plaque and tartar that is unable to be removed with normal everyday brushing at home. Such regimes will help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.

We recommend you have your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year in combination with your six monthly check-up.

Dental injuries are among the most common facial injuries sustained through participating in contact sports. Professionally made, custom fit mouthguards protect your entire mouth, as it cushions any blows or falls by distributing the force of the impact. And, because they are made to fit your teeth, they won’t fall out and are more comfortable to wear than pre-made or home fit mouthguards.

Your teeth are very important and sports like basketball, gymnastics and football may increase risks to your gum tissues and your teeth. Mouth guards help in not only protecting your entire mouth but also help prevent concussions and types of incidents of unconsciousness. Jaw fractures and neck injuries can be reduced because complications do not need to arise in situations where the lower jaw jams into the upper jaw.

Your teeth need to be protected as best as possible, so avoid using generic or non-custom mouth guards as they are ill fitting and offer little protection, if any.

Healthy Bite Dental can custom fit a mouth guard to your teeth. One appointment is required to take an upper impression of the teeth and the finished mouthguard can be ready to wear within a week.

Ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy and protected. Contact our friendly team today.
