Children’s Dentistry

Our friendly Eltham team specialise in Children’s Dentistry.

Regular dental check-ups for children from two years of age are important to develop good dental health habits and prevent future dental problems. In fact, we encourage our youngest patients, to become familiar with the dental setting from as early as their first tooth erupting in the mouth. These examinations are done using a knee-to-knee approach, so they are close to you and comfortable the whole time.

Coming along to mum and dad’s visit is a great way to start getting your children comfortable with visiting the dentist.

A positive first visit can be the first step toward a lifetime of good dental habits. The visit would usually start with a ride in the dental chair and counting their teeth, checking the gums and sometimes being able to gently clean their teeth.

We know how important a great smile is for a child’s confidence and we are passionate about educating children from an early age about the advantages of looking after their teeth and gums.

Tooth decay is damage that occurs when germs (bacteria) in the mouth makes acids that eat away at a tooth. It can lead to a hole in the tooth called a cavity. If not treated, tooth decay can cause pain, infection and tooth loss.

Healthy Bite Dental provides care, and emergency treatment for children. Services include:

  • Check-up examinations
  • Cleaning
  • Fillings
  • Fissure sealants
  • Radiographs
  • Extractions
  • Professional and dietary advice
  • Specialist referrals

We have oral health therapists who are specifically trained in children’s dental care and focused on giving your child the best head start they need to maintain a healthy smile for life.

At your child’s examination appointment, our therapist will:

  • Complete a thorough examination of the teeth and gums
  • Take x-rays when necessary
  • Highlight areas of plaque and calculus accumulation
  • Train and coach your child in toothbrushing and oral hygiene techniques
  • Remove any plaque or calculus (professional scale and clean)
  • Highlight early signs of decay or gum disease
  • Give individualised diet advice and preventive education on oral care
  • Apply fluoride to prevent decay

Our dental service is open evenings and weekends to help working parents. You and family may be eligible to receive a publicly funded dental treatment if you are a concession cardholder. To find out if you are eligible, please contact us on 9430 3100.

We also provide dental care to eligible children aged 2-17 years, under the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Schedule, and will bulk bill you on the day for any services performed under this schedule. There are no out-of-pocket costs or claims to be made by you.
